Grow locally!

Whether you’re new to farming, would like to bring an old garden back to life, or you’re an old hand at growing your own vegetables, you’ll find that the fertile soils of Fogo Island are yielding some very impressive results. Both crops and animals thrive in Fogo Island’s climate, which is a surprisingly good match for many species of plants and animals. Take, for example, spinach and kale, two crops previously unknown in most Fogo Island gardens but this summer proved to be real winners.

The Shorefast Foundation has undertaken efforts to revitalize farming on the Island and encourages you to get involved. Contact us iif you’d like to learn more about starting your own kitchen garden.

Did you know?

  • Newfoundland & Labrador ships in 90 per cent of its produce from out of the province? Only 10 per cent is grown locally. We can do better than that!

  • Fogo Island has a long tradition of sustaining its own need for fresh, locally grown vegetables.

  • Some farms on the Island are being cultivated organically, without any chemical fertilizers or pesticides.

  • Across the entire Island, gardens are flourishing, yielding produce that’s impressing organic farmers from as far away as Ontario!
